PEELS

Peels are a great form of exfoliation to reduce pore size, fine line and wrinkles, unwanted brown spots, and are a great way to treat acne and acne scarring. They can be chemical or physical, acidic, enzymatic, and/or organic. Let us help decide which option is best for your skin care goals.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a form of exfoliation that remove dead skin from the epidermis by means of acid. The acid eats up desmosomes, the glue like substance that holds skin cells together, loosening up dead skin cells. This forces skin cell turnover which has many results that can include the reduction of pore depth, fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation resulting in a more even looking skin tone and a smoother, improved skin texture. Depending on the desired results and the strength of the acid, chemical peels can be done every two weeks to only once or twice a year. The depth of the peel is determined by the acid chosen for the desired results. Acids fall into two categories, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA). Peels are applied with a facial brush or disposable cotton swab and either removed and neutralized or left on the skin to self neutralize. The stronger the peel, the quicker and more dramatic the results. Proper after care should be explained in detail and the use of SPF is highly recommended. Exposure to sun should be diligently avoided.

Glycolic, Lactic, & Mandelic Peels

Glycolic, Lactic, and Mandelic peels (all AHA’s) are usually on the lighter end of the chemical peel spectrum. These peels are generally not painful and can safely be performed up to, but not necessarily needed, every 2-3 weeks depending the clients skin type and condition. Discomfort may include itching and slight stinging at the time of application. After adequate time the peel is removed and skin is cleansed or further exfoliated to remove any remaining acid. Slight redness and tenderness can be present for 1-3 days, and slight flaking or peeling may occur on day 2 or 3.

MID-LEVEL PEELS

Mid-level peels can and usually do include blends of acids (AHA’s & BHA) like Acne Peels, Jessner Peels, and the TCA Peel. They are a bit more aggressive and should be performed no more frequently than every 4-6 weeks. TCA peels should only be performed 1-3 times per year. Again this depends on the clients skin type and condition. Depending on the peel, upon application it may be removed after a certain amount of time or left on the skin to self neutralize. These peels have a bit more sting than the peels mentioned above and more downtime and tenderness can be expected, usually 5-10 days. Peeling almost always occurs, although there are always exceptions. Skin type and condition play a major role in expected reactions. The most severe, and desired reactions are peeling from 7-10 days, tenderness and itching. There will be visible improvements in skin concerns after 14 days.

Herbal Green Peels

The Herbal Green Peel is a blend of herbs, minerals, and vitamins that nourish the skin and cause skin cell turnover. Regeneration is forced in the outer and inner layers. The mixture is firmly massaged into the skin by a special technique and is gradually absorbed. The application feels very rough and gritty and is gently removed. Skin will feel prickly for 1-5 days and will peel or not, according to the amount of time spent massaging the mixture in. This peel is a very effective form of exfoliation with outstanding results in the appearance of acne, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and pore reduction. The barrier function of the skin is also improved resulting in stronger, healthier, more fortified skin with a glowing, hydrated complexion.2 or 3.
